Homework Policy
Toronto District School Board trustee Josh Matlow, who brought forward the less homework policy more than a year ago, speaks with CTV Toronto PDF Print E-mail

A Toronto District School Board committee has voted in favour of a report that limits the amount of homework teachers can assign.

The committee members voted to support the "family-friendly" policy on Wednesday night. The proposal has three recommendations:

    * Students shouldn't be penalized for handing in assignments late or incomplete
    * Students shouldn't be assigned homework on scheduled holidays or other significant days
    * The amount of workload should be broken down by grade: Those in Grades 1 to 6 should only get reading assignments, those in Grades 7 and 8 should get no more than one hour of homework a night and high school students should get no more than two hours.

"This is a moderately balanced approach, but at the end of the day it's a family-friendly motion, a family-friendly policy that will support students and ensure that they will do their homework but at reasonable times and (be given) a reasonable amount," trustee Josh Matlow said after the vote.

Matlow, who brought forward the proposal more than a year ago, says studies indicate homework at an early age is redundant.

When asked about the concerns over not penalizing students for incomplete assignments, Matlow said there is a difference between a penalty and a consequence.

"We need to teach kids time management skills and the importance of meeting deadlines .... however, what we're telling teachers though -- and many teachers already do this but many teachers also don't -- is sit down with the child and understand what's happening," the trustee told CTV Toronto at noon.

"Some children might have family challenges, some might simply be struggling with the workload or understanding what they've been asked to do, and we need to first work with them."

Matlow said teachers can still use their current methods of discipline, such as taking off marks, forbidding a student from attending a school event or keeping the child after school.

The homework policy report comes before a full board meeting in two weeks for a final vote.

If the policies pass, they could be implemented by the start of the fall school year.

The homework load of some Toronto students just got a little lighter.

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) voted tonight to adopt a new policy that will set strict guidelines as to the amount of homework teachers can send home with students.

The Program and School Services Committee recommended the new plan to the board on April 2.

Trustee Josh Matlow was pleased with the decision and looks forward to its implementation.

“This will have a direct impact on the lives of kids and families,” Matlow said. “It will return family time to families.”

Homework banned on holidays PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 16 April 2008 19:00

Natalie Alcoba,  National Post

Students in Toronto public schools will be doing less homework come September, after trustees voted in favour of changing the board's policy.

The revised homework policy bans homework on holidays and other "days of significance," and also reduces the amount of time it suggests students should spend on work at home. Homework in kindergarten -- formally expected to be about 10 minutes a night-- will disappear. Home assignments for students in early elementary grades should be family-related activities, such as cooking, and more independent work assigned in the later years. Middle-schoolers should have an hour of homework or less, and it should take high school students under two hours to complete their work.

A senior administrator with the Avon-Maitland District School Board favours another look at how homework is assigned to very young students.

Superintendent of Curriculum Pat Stanley says the Board five years ago published a homework guide for schools.

Stanley says there are positive suggestions in it, but that perhaps now is a good time to review the document in case changes need to be made.

`Family-friendly' policy would cap students' load, but one trustee urges penalties for work not done

Louise Brown, Education Reporter, The Toronto Star

Toronto's 270,000 public school students will have homework-free holidays and no more than two hours a day of homework, ever, if the school board adopts a new "family-friendly" homework policy recommended by a committee of trustees last night.

But at least one trustee wants stricter penalties when homework is not done.

Toronto school board to determine whether students do their homework PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 01 April 2008 19:00

TORONTO - Toronto public school trustees on Wednesday discussed the merits of a new policy that would significantly reduce the amount of homework students are assigned, and sent it on to a board meeting for approval.

If the changes are adopted, teachers would no longer assign homework on holidays and on other "significant days."

The amount of time children should be spending on homework would decrease across the board - and disappear in kindergarten.

Kristin Rushowy, Education Reporter, The Toronto Star

Students should not be assigned homework on holidays such as March Break or Christmas or other "days of significance," says a groundbreaking policy before Toronto's public school board.

The draft document – the result of weeks of consultations with thousands of parents, teachers, principals and community members – also says students in kindergarten should have no homework other than reading with or talking to their parents. And up to Grade 2, it says, homework should consist mostly of playing games, having discussions or even cooking with family members.
