For ease of reading, the full text of my letter is reprinted below:
Dear Mr. Pennachetti,
I am writing this to express my concern regarding the boilerplate mission statement that follows each City of Toronto official news release. The content of the current mission statement is inappropriately ideological, partisan, and aspirational in nature. Additionally, it speaks for City Council without the authority to do so.
The most troubling line of the current mission statement is: "Toronto's government is dedicated to delivering customer service excellence, creating a transparent and accountable government, reducing the size and cost of government and building a transportation city." Toronto's government is City Council, but I am confident that Council did not endorse this sentiment.
The City of Toronto's mission statement should not be a political weathervane. Instead, it should be a factual paragraph that reflects our city's fundamental characteristics and qualities that we can all agree on.
I am requesting that you revise the City of Toronto's official boilerplate so that it is reflective of our city as a whole and our residents' common values, rather than any one ideological or political perspective.
Please advise what steps you will take to move forward with this revision.
Toronto City Councillor
Ward 22 – St. Paul's
