City News: Jack Layton gets an outpouring of well wishes

An outpouring of well wishes from politicians and the general public immediately followed Jack Layton’s announcement that he was temporarily stepping down as NDP leader to get medical treatment for a new cancer.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said he was deeply saddened that Layton is taking a leave and wished him a speedy recovery so he can quickly return to his post as the leader of the official Opposition in Parliament.

Twitter was chock full of support messages too from family, colleagues and those not involved in politics.

In fact, shortly after Layton announced Monday afternoon that he was temporarily stepping down as leader to seek medical help for another cancer, his name was one of the top trending search topics on Twitter.

Layton’s son, Toronto city councillor Mike tweeted his appreciation for the well-wishes: “I’m moved by all the support for my father and family. Thank you. He’s a fighter and stronger from your support in this battle.”

Prime Minister Stephen Harper had encouraging words, writing “I salute the courage @jacklayton continues to show in his fight against cancer. I wish Jack a successful recovery.”

Layton’s provincial counterpart, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath wrote: “My thoughts and prayers are with my friend Jack Layton.”

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May expressed her support for Layton, writing: “Temporary leave of absence for Jack Layton to get well. Praying for his full recovery. As are all Canadians.”

With Layton holding the riding of Toronto-Danforth, it comes as no surprise many Toronto politicians were also wishing him well.

“Jack, wishing you and your family all the best – you have always been a fighter,” said Toronto Mayor Rob Ford.

“Jack Layton was incredibly brave and inspiring today. Get well, bon Jack, get well,” wrote former mayor David Miller.

“Best wishes to Jack Layton as he focuses on his health and his recovery. My thoughts are with my colleague, @m_layton and his family,” said Toronto Coun. Josh Matlow.

Those not involved in politics also wished Layton a speedy recovery.

“Political ideologies aside, there’s no doubting Jack Layton’s passion/conviction – fight on Jack!” @TOpaperboy wrote.

“Very sorry to hear about Jack Layton’s health problems. He is a passionate politician deserving of accolades for the NDP’s successes,” said @VanCrimLawyer.
