Councillors are urging landlords, including that of this building at 44 Jackes Ave., to keep air conditioning turned on through this September heat wave.
A bylaw which requires that landlords maintain a minimum temperature of 21 degrees Celsius is creating unbearable conditions for many tenants amidst the recent heatwave. While many landlords have turned the heat on in order to meet this requirement, Councillors Mihevic and Matlow are urging landlords to turn the air conditioning back on while temperatures remain hot. Residents have also complained that landlords are too focused on complying with the bylaw, instead of adjusting the building temperatures in response to the higher than normal outdoor temperatures.
The heat has led to at least one resident taken to hospital and Mayor John Tory has said that he is open to a review of the bylaw.
