The city’s audit committee has asked for a report on the possibility of publishing the expenses of senior staff members online, similar to the system in place for councillors.
Councillor and deputy mayor Doug Holyday, freshly elected as chair of the audit committee, brought forward the motion Tuesday. It asks the city manager to report to the committee “on the feasibility of publishing expense details of all senior city staff for 2010 and future years on the City’s public web site.”
Councillor Josh Matlow, also a member of the committee, lauded the concept. “All tax dollars should be transparent, and we should all be accountable for how we spend those tax dollars,” he said in an interview.
Mr. Matlow expressed a note of caution about publishing expenses for accountability officers, such as the ombudsman and the integrity commissioner, noting this would have to be done “carefully” to protect their independence.
Detailed expenses for members of council are regularly posted on the city’s website.
