Councillors have voted to freeze their salaries.
On Tuesday, they rejected 39-3 a 2.6-per cent cost of living adjustment that would have hiked their salary to about $102,000. Right now they make about $99,000.
Councillor Josh Matlow voted in favour of the freeze and says he agrees that there is merit in the symbolism of being restrained about their pay when they are asking unions and bureaucrats to cut waste.
But he says the vote should not have happened as it did.
“It puts everybody under pressure to not end up on the front of a newspaper looking like somebody who’s trying to line their pockets.”
He says it’s something that should be decided after a conversation with Toronto residents on just how much our politicians should make.
Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon agrees. “We should not be deciding our salary.”
