Dear Mr. Buckley,
This autumn, from October 12 to October 20, the TTC is planning an unprecedented downtown subway closure to accommodate important maintenance and upgrades. This closure will affect thousands of transit riders including weekday commuters, shoppers, tourists, and holiday-weekend travellers. It is absolutely imperative that we are fully prepared well in advance to accommodate everyone who needs to travel to and within downtown Toronto, the economic hub of our global metropolis.
I am writing to urge you to take the substantive steps necessary to keep downtown Toronto moving. With transportation capacity significantly reduced, we should prioritize shuttle buses (perhaps with shuttle bus-only lanes), bicyclists and pedestrians on Yonge Street to ensure that people can continue to move during this period of disruption.
More space should also be protected for walking where sidewalk crowding is likely to cause dangerous conditions, such as near Union Station.
Downtown Toronto does not have to grind to a halt during this subway closure as long as we are prepared to take meaningful action. Please let me know if you need any assistance from me, Toronto East York Community Council, or City Council. Obviously, I would expect that these initiatives be considered in consultation with the local City Councillor.
