Midtown in Focus: Yonge-Eglinton Secondary Plan
To advocate for the quality of life in our community, in 2015, I helped initiate the Midtown in Focus review for the Yonge-Eglinton area. After three years of intensive study by our dedicated City Planning Staff, we received a report that told what we already know: social services and hard infrastructure have not kept pace with the rapid growth in our community.
More importantly, the Midtown in Focus study provides up-to-date policy that will guide growth in the area and identify necessary capital upgrades, including the basic like pipes and wire capacity, along with expanded social services. I will continue to work with City Planning to further support local residents by helping to ensure that physical and community infrastructure will accommodate existing and projected growth in the Yonge-Eglinton area.
Yonge & St. Clair Secondary Plan
The Yonge and St. Clair Area is surrounded by some of Toronto’s most beautiful neighborhoods. Unfortunately, many of the vibrant shops and restaurants that used to dominate its main streets have closed in the last couple decades.
However, today Yonge & St. Clair still has a lot of positive attributes that make it a remarkable destination for would-be retailers. The intersection is served by two transit lines, it’s close to downtown, has nearby ravines and parks, and is at the heart of Deer Park and Summerhill.
It’s time to revitalize Yonge and St. Clair.
That’s why I’m pleased that my colleagues supported my motion in Council to move forward with a new Secondary Plan for Yonge and St. Clair to help ensure that new growth contributes to the quality of life for local residents. I look forward to continuing to work with you to make the main streets of Yonge and St. Clair to once again reflect the community that surrounds them.
Eglinton Connects
As you know, work is well underway toward constructing midtown’s underground Crosstown LRT stations. Eglinton Connects is the long term plan to beautify Eglinton with wider sidewalks, new planters and well-designed public space which will start implementation when the line opens in 2021
Forest Hill Urban Design Guidelines
In February 2014, I successfully moved a motion requesting City Planning Staff to study Forest Hill Village, located along Spadina Road, and prepare Urban Design Guidelines to protect the feeling of this distinctive area.
The mandate for the Forest Hill Village Urban Design Guidelines is to maintain the small town character of the area by identifying the appropriate urban character, materials, building rhythm, and articulation for future developments and/or renovations within the study area. The study included a Staff recommendation for a maximum of four storeys for the Village.
These new guidelines will help strengthen City Planning’s position when assessing future development applications for the Village.
