Like many of you, my office received the Metrolinx/Crosslinx notice about a December closure of Bathurst Street at Eglinton Avenue. I was surprised by, and frankly upset about their announcement, as they had not received a permit from the City of Toronto to do this. We were able to prevent the announced December closure from occurring. However, Metrolinx/Crosslinx still want to proceed with a closure this year. We have confirmed that they must hold a full and complete public consultation with the residents in our community as I believe consultation should come before, not after, announcements of a decision.
While Metrolinx/Crosslinx has stated that the seven-month closure could shorten the construction at Bathurst and Eglinton for three months, there is no evidence that this will speed up the actual Eglinton Crosstown LRT completion date. Moreover, there are significant concerns about the bus detours, and traffic infiltration into neighbourhoods this closure could cause, further exacerbating the situation residents are already living with every day.
I have worked closely with my colleague, Councillor Mike Colle and Mayor Tory’s office to urge Metrolinx and all parties involved to schedule a town hall meeting, that would include local provincial MPPs. I encourage you and your neighbours to attend this meeting at 7:00pm on Wednesday January 16th at Beth Tzedec Congregation (1700 Bathurst Steet).
I hope look to see you there to ensure your voice is heard.
