Councillor Josh Matlow

Amica Balmoral Club

As many of you know, COVID-19 has been particularly virulent with elders in our community, especially in long-term care and retirement homes where it has been running rampant.

As Toronto’s Seniors Advocate, I’m very concerned about, and deeply saddened by, the devastating impact this virus is having on our senior population.

For those who are in self-isolation, I want you to know that we care about you and you are not alone. For those who are unwell because of the virus, I wish you our support, strength and a full recovery. And for those families and friends that have lost a loved one from COVID-19, my deepest and most sincere condolences to you.

Our community appreciates the heroic and caring personal support workers, nurses, doctors, health care workers, management teams, cleaners, kitchen staff, coordinators and everyone who works tirelessly to support our loved ones. No words can adequately express our heartfelt gratitude and support.

Many of you have asked how you can offer your support from a physical distance.

Please leave a message of encouragement, love and gratitude for the Amica Balmoral Club community in the comment section below.

Most importantly, if we all do our part, spend time at home and slow the spread of the virus, more of our parents, grandparents, family members, friends and neighbours can get the care they need to survive this.

My heart goes out to everyone at Amica Balmoral Club – the residents, caregivers, staff and families. My mother spent 2 years of her life in a LTC home in St. Catharines, and I saw first-hand all the hard work, care and compassion that goes into caring for our elderly. Thank you for everything you do!

Please know that many of us in the Toronto community are doing all we can to stay in isolation and stop the spread of this virus. Although both my parents are now gone, I “get it” – I value all of your lives, so I am happy to sacrifice a few freedoms to make sure we all come through this safely.

Sending much love and support, Elizabeth

Sending our heartfelt gratitude and positive energy to Monica and Marlene and all the special staff members and residents at the Balmoral. You are doing such important work, thank you. Peace and strength from the family of Dr Donald Montgomery, who resided there from 2016-2018. Thank you and hang in there.

    A little poem;
“It’s all I have to bring to-day” By Emily Dickinson

    It’s all I have to bring to-day,
    This, and my heart beside,
This, and my heart, and all the fields,
    And all the meadows wide.
Be sure you count, should I forget, —
Someone the sum could tell, —
This, and my heart, and all the bees
    Which in the clover dwell.

Monica and Marlene, I’m thinking of all of you at this time. My friend Mr. John Lindsay was with you for a number of years and I often think of how well cared for and comfortable he was in his last years. I wish I could come by for dinner like I used to do with John. I hope you, and all the staff and residents are well.

I am a teacher at The York School down the street and we have loved bringing our Grade 9 students to Balmoral house to paint with Senior’s Wish. I wanted to send our love from York during these uncertain times. Many of you might remember a similar national pandemic when the polio outbreak was at its peak in 1953. We found the vaccine for that and the brilliant scientific minds around the world will do it again. Stay strong, stay safe and know you are all in our thoughts.
