Councillor Josh Matlow

The Briton House

As many of you know, COVID-19 has been particularly virulent with elders in our community, especially in long-term care and retirement homes where it has been running rampant.

As Toronto’s Seniors Advocate, I’m very concerned about, and deeply saddened by, the devastating impact this virus is having on our senior population.

For those who are in self-isolation, I want you to know that we care about you and you are not alone. For those who are unwell because of the virus, I wish you our support, strength and a full recovery. And for those families and friends that have lost a loved one from COVID-19, my deepest and most sincere condolences to you.

Our community appreciates the heroic and caring personal support workers, nurses, doctors, health care workers, management teams, cleaners, kitchen staff, coordinators and everyone who works tirelessly to support our loved ones. No words can adequately express our heartfelt gratitude and support.

Many of you have asked how you can offer your support from a physical distance.

Please leave a message of encouragement, love and gratitude for the Briton House community in the comment section below.

Most importantly, if we all do our part, spend time at home and slow the spread of the virus, more of our parents, grandparents, family members, friends and neighbours can get the care they need to survive this.

A huge thank you to all of the front line staff at Briton House. The work that you do makes such a huge difference in so many lives. Thank you for being there for our loved ones, when we cannot be there. Your kindness and endless support goes a long way to help the residents and our families cope with these strange times.

And to the residents, please know that you are loved and are not alone. These are strange times we are dealing with and may you be able to rest comfortably, be well taken care of, and feel the love that we are all sending you! –Marcie

For clarification, The Briton House Retirement Centre remains Covid -19 free. We have had no residents or staff test positive for Covid at this point and we are not, nor have we been, in a Covid outbreak. We appreciate the out pouring of support, not only for the Briton House, but also for those working in the Senior Care Sector, and appreciate the sentiment and thought behind Josh Matlow’s comments. Thank you to all who have taken time to post kind words. Together with all members of this community, we wish to express our heartfelt support to those who care for our most vulnerable. They are indeed heroes, as Jennifer H. mentions above. We at the Briton House, and throughout this community, look forward to certain brighter days ahead.

My heart goes out to everyone at Briton House- the residents, caregivers, staff and families. My mother spent 2 years of her life in a LTC home in St. Catharines, and I saw first-hand all the hard work, care and compassion that goes into caring for our elderly. Thank you for everything you do!

Please know that many of us in the Toronto community are doing all we can to stay in isolation and stop the spread of this virus. Although both my parents are now gone, I “get it” – I value all of your lives, so I am happy to sacrifice a few freedoms to make sure we all come through this safely.

Sending much love and support, Elizabeth

    A little poem;
“It’s all I have to bring to-day” By Emily Dickinson

    It’s all I have to bring to-day,
    This, and my heart beside,
This, and my heart, and all the fields,
    And all the meadows wide.
Be sure you count, should I forget, —
Someone the sum could tell, —
This, and my heart, and all the bees
    Which in the clover dwell.
