Questions Regarding Police & School Board Safety Communications

Re: Questions Regarding Police & School Board Safety Communications

Dear Superintendent Narine, Dr. Kathy Witherow and Dr. Brendan Browne,

As a City Councillor, and local parent, I want to express my gratitude and support for the police investigation that took place yesterday and continues to take place today in the Allen Road and Eglinton Avenue West area. I’m writing to inquire into your communications protocol with respect to informing the community about the impact your investigations have on local schools. Many parents and guardians have asked questions about whether or not the police and school boards could’ve provided them with more timely information to assist them in making informed decisions on whether or not to send their child(ren) to school.

Moreover, the feedback that I heard from both parents and guardians included that it would be helpful for this information, both on social media and email, to include descriptions on the difference between a hold and secure and a lockdown. I’d be very grateful if you could share what the communications protocol is in these circumstances to ensure that parents and guardians have all the relevant information they need when there is a potential threat to the safety and wellbeing of their respective school community. Many parents and guardians in the community have told me that they believe there is significant room for improvement and as a parent myself, I share their concerns based on my family’s experience.

I’d appreciate you making this a priority and following up with my office at your earliest opportunity.
